Background
South Sudan, the world’s youngest country, faces persistent challenges including conflict, economic instability, and climate shocks. The influx of over 1.1 million people fleeing conflict in Sudan since April 2023 has strained communities and humanitarian resources.
Currently, over 7.5 million people are in crisis-level food insecurity, with children being the most affected. WFP provides vital food and nutrition assistance while also supporting long-term recovery, community resilience, and peacebuilding initiatives, especially for women and girls.
Role Overview
The Communications Officer will report to the Head of Communications and will lead the planning, development, and implementation of communication strategies, media engagement, social media management, and content creation to enhance WFP’s visibility and public image in South Sudan.
Key Responsibilities:
Communications
- Develop and execute country-specific communication plans aligned with WFP’s strategy.
- Produce and review communication materials including press releases, articles, media kits, speeches, feature stories, videos, and presentations.
- Conduct research and analysis to generate targeted information products for key audiences.
- Create donor-focused content to support fundraising initiatives.
Media Relations
- Design and implement media engagement strategies.
- Manage proactive and reactive media relations, addressing press inquiries.
- Develop press materials, talking points, Q&As, and story pitches.
- Prepare WFP leadership for media appearances and events.
- Organize press events, roundtables, and conferences, including engagement with digital and non-traditional media.
Social Media Management
- Develop and implement social media strategies with measurable KPIs.
- Manage content creation, posting, engagement, and monitoring across WFP’s channels (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube).
- Support fundraising campaigns and digital advocacy initiatives through social media.
- Provide social media training and support for staff capacity building.
Digital Content & Communications
- Produce multimedia content for social media, websites, and digital channels.
- Coordinate in-house and external production of communication materials, ensuring brand compliance.
- Upload and manage digital content on content management systems.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Media, Journalism, Marketing, Languages, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree: minimum 5 years in communications, journalism, media, or PR.
- Master’s degree: minimum 3 years postgraduate experience.
- Proven experience in social media management, growth strategy, and digital content creation.
- Proficiency with social media tools (Meta Insights, Google Analytics, scheduling tools) and content design software (Photoshop, Canva, etc.).
- Strong writing, editing, and media relations skills.
- Experience in stakeholder engagement and partnership building.
- Fluent in English (level C).
