Minimum Requirements
Education:
- Literacy required; secondary school education is an added advantage.
Experience:
- Previous work experience as a Radio Operator is desirable.
- Experience in related technical or communication roles is a plus.
Languages:
- Proficiency in both English and Swahili (written and spoken) is required.
Job Purpose
To ensure secure, confidential, and effective communication for the operational needs of the mission, in line with MSF safety procedures and communication protocols. The Radio Operator will be responsible for managing communication equipment, monitoring field movements, and maintaining proper records.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate HF and VHF radios in accordance with MSF security and communication protocols, avoiding any use of sensitive information.
- Monitor frequency quality and configure radio settings as needed.
- Accurately log all messages in the radio logbook and relay messages to relevant parties.
- Communicate with external organizations where required and forward received information.
- Maintain scheduled contact with base stations and report any field security concerns to the Project Coordinator.
- Track and record movements of vehicles, flights, personnel, and cargo, including times, routes, and check-ins, and alert managers of any delays.
- Supervise the radio handset logbook and ensure proper issue and return tracking of radios.
- Maintain and perform basic preventive checks on communication equipment; report faults or losses to the supervisor.
- Ensure cleanliness and order in the communication room and check battery conditions.
- Train staff on proper radio usage when necessary.
- Handle mobile phones assigned to the radio room and manage incoming calls.
- Coordinate with the Head Driver regarding vehicle and ambulance dispatch.
- Switch between generators during downtime and notify mechanics in case of failure, especially during nights or weekends.
- Ensure staff sign out and return devices (walkie-talkies, tablets, handsets) responsibly.
